The history of our hotel

Until 1952, the “Wienerwaldhof” was operated as a part-time farm. The foundations of the “Wienerwaldhof” as it is known today were laid by Franz Rieger I. With room for 16 people it originally served as a resting area for hikers and travellers by offering them some time to rest, hospitality and self-produced farm products.

After Franz I. died in 1960, the farm was handed over to his wife and his son Franz II., who continued to run the business. During the following years the lounge area was built and 14 new rooms were added allowing more people to stay overnight.

In 1963, a road was built to the Strohzogl providing easier access. Horse-drawn carriages were used to carry the vast amount of gravel needed for construction.
Very soon the “Waldgasthof Rieger” became well known even among visitors from abroad as the perfect place to relax and enjoy the unspoilt countryside.

Wedding of Franz II. and Johanna, son Manfred (born in 1970), son Franz (born in 1975) and daughter Monika (born in 1977).

The main building was continuously enlarged by adding more rooms and stables.

In 1981 and 1982, "Haus Troppberg" was built as a result of the increasing numbers of guests coming to the hotel. A few years later in 1987, more guest rooms were added to “Haus Heinratsberg”. The old farm stables were systematically turned into new guest rooms and used for hotel purposes.

With continuously growing numbers of nature lovers searching for an ideal place to relax, the “Waldgasthof Rieger” opened a large winter garden, reception area and another wing of guest rooms in 1993.

In 2000, the "Reit- und Fahrstall Rieger" (riding stable) was built, currently providing a home for more than 20 horses in both indoor and outdoor horse boxes. Horse riding lessons and horse-drawn carriage tours are organized by Monika Rieger and Franz Rieger sen.

In 2001, wedding of Franz III. and Johanna, with their children: Sophie (born in 2001) und Franz IV (born in 2003).

In 2008, several new seminar rooms were built. Our hotel now offers 4 bright and spacious seminar rooms and a separate break area. All of the rooms of “Haus Troppberg” have been adapted according our business guests´ needs and wants.

In 2009, the new wellness and spa area (including indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam bath) was opened.

In 2011, our 4 panaroma rooms were finally completed.
